I made some icons at work for one of our clients- the Make an Impact Schools challenge. There are 9 challenges they present to help people make an impact and be more green. My job was to come up with icons to match. I sketched some ideas, then after finalizing the ideas, drew better versions of them. After scanning them in I tweaked them a bit, but they still retain the hand drawn look and feel. Here’s the list:

  1. Don’t let the water run, use cold water from the tap
  2. Turn down the thermostat at night and when you leave the house
  3. Ride your bike instead of using a car or carpooling
  4. Recycle 5 cans, 5 plastic bottles and 1/2 pound of paper every week at your school
  5. Turn off your lights, use natural light
  6. Replace your incandescents with CFLs
  7. Reduce your shower time by 5 min. every day
  8. Use power strips and unplug them when not in use
  9. Complete the MAI carbon emissions calculator with your family

Can you guess which icons stands for what?

My co-worker also thought that it would be a cool tshirt:

I liked this project because it reminded me of the work of one of my favorite illustrators, Kate Bingaman Burt.

Notes from DC Week

I attended DC week today. To learn more go to their website: DC Week. There were a lot of different keynotes and lectures. Some were great! Others were a little….interesting.

One of my favorites was the keynote “future media trends” with David Shing from AOL. I took studious notes:

Then there was the Creative direction panel. A little more meander-y IMO. There were all these gobo lights of the sponors on the wall which somehow worked their way into my notes…

I also really enjoyed the social media and analytics panel session. I did take notes, but also did a few doodles:

And finally there was an HTML5 panel that I thought was good, but maybe a little too over my head. However, I did enjoy drawing the multiple outlines of my hands from two lights projecting onto my paper. I added some color in photoshop to show you an idea of what it looked like:

So I received a snowflake the other day from a 6 year old. You know, the paper cut out kind. It wasn’t the most beautifully crafted snowflake I’ve ever seen, but it did have an interesting shape. It sat on my desk for a few days and then one day during I company meeting I took it and started doodling on the white paper. When I’d filled up the paper I felt obligated to continue so I scanned it in and kept adding layers in photoshop. There wasn’t some master plan behind it all, but I did achieve the look I was going for. What do you think? Have you ever doodled something and then it turned into something more? Is this art? Tell me what you think in the comments below.

Last month I entered the illustration contest “doodle something good in the world” from GOOD magazine. I’ve been a fan of their for a long time. If you’ve never heard of them, you seriously are missing out. Check them out at www.good.is.

Anyway, I didn’t really expect to win and I didn’t, but apparently they liked my work enough to post my work on their site along with 47 of their other favorites!

Here’s what I submitted:

You can see the other pieces along with the three winners here. I’m number 8 in the slideshow.

Recently saw the movie Black Swan with natalie portman. It’s up for best picture at the Oscars this year. It was a beautiful window into a dancer’s life and how there’s more to it than meets the eye of the audience. Of course, it’s dramatized for film, but I think the themes are beautiful. Here are some sketches I made after wards.
